The Complete Guide To Fly Fishing

Money Saving Fly Fishing Tips

"The trout do not rise in the cemetery, so you better do your fishing while you are still able." - Sparse Grey Hackle

Fly fishing is a sport that is enjoyed by many, both men and women. Some people shy away it mainly because they fear that participating in the activity will be more than their budget can bear. As with any other sport, fly fishing can become pricey depending on the gear that you purchase, but you can still cast a line without breaking your piggy bank.

A few tips for saving money on fly fishing include:

1 Purchase your gear from a fly fishing specialty shop. At first thought, it may seem as though buying gear from a fishing shop would be more expensive than from the tackle aisle at the local hardware store. However, it is actually the reverse opposite. A fishing shop will not only have the widest selection, but they will also have the best prices.

2 Purchase your gear off-season.  Granted you may not be dreaming of casting a line when there is still snow on the ground, but this is actually the perfect time to buy your supplies.  During the off-season, fishing supply stores are in need of business and often promote sales events.

3 Do not purchase everything at one time.  When you first take up the sport of fly fishing, you are going to be tempted to go all out and get every piece of equipment they are offering.  You will save yourself money if you purchase things as they go on sale.  The savings using this approach can be substantial.

4 Buy a rod and reel combination.  Most avid fly anglers will balk at this suggestion, but if you are an occasional participant, you do not need an expensive reel.  It is also a great idea to use a rod and reel combination when you are first learning the sport.  When and if you do decide to invest in more expensive gear you can sell the combination set and recoup part of that initial investment.

5 Share gear with a friend. If you have a friend who is also a fly fishing enthusiast but he or she is not able to go as often as they would like, consider approaching them with the idea of sharing gear.  They may have the waders while you have a new reel; by trading off you will both save some money.

6 Plan a fly fishing trip with a group.  Unfortunately, not everyone who enjoys the sport of fly fishing lives in an area where it can be done.  They have to travel when they have the urge to fish and the cost of a trip can quickly add up.  By planning a trip with several others cost are immediately reduced, everything from gasoline to hotel accommodations are lowered.  Add to that the fact that it is simply more fun to fish with others and it is a true win-win situation.

Fly fishing is a wonderful sport for the outdoor lover.  With some careful research and a bit of bargain hunting the anglers can take to the water while still staying on budget.

Visit your local fishing supply store to get an idea of what they have to offer.  The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and their main goal is getting you equipped so you can enjoy your time on the water safely.  Once you are ready to cast your line, it will not be long before you feel a tug on your line.
